About ten minutes after that I was still looking out the window and pouting, and I heard the GPS say something about Potawatomi Inn being ahead on the right, and then Dirk looked over and told me happy anniversary.... and I was so surprised and overwhelmed!! Instead of seeing a friend from high school, we were headed for a weekend away to where we had gone on our honeymoon!!
Four years ago we got married in a huge snowstorm, and after a couple nights in Fort Wayne, came here to Pokagon State Park. We had the whole place to ourselves-- it was the most snow they had seen in a decade or so, and we were able to upgrade our room at the inn to a cabin. We hiked in the snow and visited the nature center, and we swam in the pool and had a wonderful time. Every December since then we've wanted to come back, but it just hasn't worked out. Imagine my surprise when I found out Dirk had booked the suite we're in five months ago!
We went on two hikes today, partly retracing our steps from four years ago, and swam in the pool and hot tub, and I made a little turtle pull toy in the craft room (be still, my beating heart). The inn here is so nice-- there are all these little cozy alcoves for families to retreat to, and there's a game room, a long airy hallway with tables filled with jigsaw puzzles and rocking chairs... And the best part? It snowed today! We went to the toboggan run but didn't sled-- maybe next time. Dirk already rented a cabin for us for next year, so we're looking forward to coming back!
What a perfect way to celebrate four years of marriage to my best friend, to see the ways God has grown us together, to relax and take a retreat from our crazy schedules. This year we have a very physical reminder of how God has answered years of prayers, and we just feel so blessed. So thank you, honey, for a perfect gift, and I look forward to many more celebrations of years with you.
Here we raise our Ebenezer, hither by thy grace we've come...
